Violence escalates ahead of Iraqi general election

(VOVworld) – Several suicide bombings in Iraq on Monday caused 26 deaths and many injured.

A suicide bomber detonated explosives installed in a car at the checkpoint in Suweirah, south of Baghdad, causing 13 deaths and 35 injured. A car bomb also exploded at a crowded area in the city of Sadr, north of Baghdad, killing 5 and injuring 14. Iraqi security forces had to seal off streets, after a suicide bombing happened at a crowded area in the central district of Karrada, causing 3 deaths and at least 14 injured.
Violence in Iraq keeps escalating less than a week before its first general election since US troops withdrew in 2011. Since the beginning of this year, violent acts between the Shiite majority and Arab Sunni Muslim caused 2,750 deaths.
