More than 50 years ago, Nguyen Van Troi was sentenced to death and executed by the Republic of Vietnam government at Chi Hoa prison. His 9 minutes on the execution ground have become immortal in the hearts of peace-loving people around the world, including Venezuelans. His staunch spirit set an example for Venezuelans. Juan Flores Guitierrez composed the song in memory of the heroic Vietnamese communist. In Troi’s home town, Juan said: “I love Uncle Ho and General Vo Nguyen Giap and admire Troi’s heroic sacrifice. I’m glad to visit Vietnam for the second time. I wrote a song about Troi but this is the first time that I’ve visited his hometown and got to know his younger brother. This will inspire my future compositions about Vietnam and the heroic Vietnamese mothers.”

Before their visit, the delegation encouraged their families and friends to make donations to Nguyen Van Troi school. Juan said he will personally establish a fund to provide scholarships to students in Dien Ban district. School principal Ngo Van Nho said he is appreciative of the feeling Venezuelan friends have for Dien Ban: “We will use their scholarships to help disadvantaged students who have had to give up their studies.”

Ivan’s daughter, a second grader, is studying in Hanoi. She accompanied her father on the visit to Nguyen Van Troi’s hometown: “I’m glad to visit Quang Nam and Da Nang and to burn incense for Mr. Troi. I’ve met a lot of people here. I want to go with my father to Quang Nam to learn a few more things. I love Vietnam and I will definitely visit it again and again.”
