Increasing dialogue and cooperation to reduce tension in East Sea

(VOVworld) – The 25th conference on controlling potential conflicts in the East Sea was held in Jakarta on Friday and Saturday. This is an annual meeting between 10 ASEAN members, China, and Chinese Taipei to discuss cooperative projects through which to reduce tension and increase cooperation dialogue in the region. Head of the Vietnamese delegation Nguyen Minh Nguyet said Vietnam has sufficient legal and historical evidence for its sovereignty claim in the East Sea. Vietnam is concerned over recent developments, particularly the expansion of shoals and changing the status quo of some structures in the East Sea. These activities have harmed the environment and biodiversity and affected peace, stability, and security in the region. The Vietnamese delegation praised results of a meeting in October of the ASEAN-China joint taskforce to deploy the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC), in which both sides agreed to discuss components of the Code of Conduct in the East Sea (COC).
