Mekong River Delta Forum 2015 aims at sustainable development

(VOVworld) – The Mekong River Delta Forum convenes in Ho Chi Minh city on February 2-3 to collect recommendations to the strategy of the Mekong River Delta’s sustainable development in face of climate changes challenges. The forum was co-organized by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the World Bank, and other development partners of Vietnam.

At the forum Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai stressed the role and strategic position of the Mekong River Delta in ensuring national food security and sustainable development of the southern region and the whole country. Mr. Hai said the Vietnamese government has actively directed the integration of climate change response activities in socio-economic development plans. Apart from government investment, Deputy Prime Minister Hai expected that international organizations would continue to support Vietnam’s efforts to deal with climate change.

The delegates discussed the importance of strengthening capabilities in natural disaster forecasting and warning, regional planning, and climate change and sea level rise monitoring systems in the Mekong River Delta.

The forum analyzed recommendations for the Mekong River Delta Plan in the 2016-2020 period and following years.
