In 1990, several families in Mai Son district began growing custard-apples and found them very profitable. Custard-apple farms now cover 200ha. The custard-apple trees thrive in the local soil and climate, bearing sweet, fragrant fruit with soft skin, a nice green appearance, white flesh, and fewer seeds. Custard-apple growers can earn tens of thousands of dollars.

The Mai Son district authorities have encouraged farmers to form cooperatives, offered them preferential loans, and helped them learn new techniques, manage quality, and build a trademark. The Mai Son custard-apple trademark received a certificate of trademark last Saturday.

Cam Van Thang, Head of Mai Son district’s Office of Agriculture and Rural Development, said:  “Now that the Mai Son custard-apple has a trademark, we have received orders from Dubai and several European countries. We’ll encourage communes and villages to expand production acreage and continue to help farmers improve their farming techniques and standards to meet current market demand.”
