(VOVWORLD) - Phu Thuong village in Hanoi is famous for its traditional sticky rice. Recently, the craft was recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage.

The recognition was announced at the 7th Phu Thuong Traditional Sticky Rice Festival over the past three days. Cong Ngoc Phuong, Head of the Phu Gia Pagoda Management Subcommittee said Phu Thuong village has 600 families making sticky rice and selling it in many traditional markets and stores in Hanoi. Phu Thuong sticky rice is served at ceremonies and parties in many provinces and cities.
"Everyone in the village promotes sticky rice making and helps to maintain food safety standards throughout the production process. In addition to selling sticky rice products in Vietnam, we aim to ship them to foreign markets,' said Phuong.
Phu Thuong, west of Hanoi, is the hub of traditional sticky rice making. The village creates a variety of sticky rice styles, including delectable sweet soup-infused sticky rice, a flavorful combination of green beans and fried onion sticky rice, distinctive gac-enhanced sticky rice, and a visually appealing five-color sticky rice. Each variety entails its own meticulous process, from soaking the rice to blending the ingredients and carefully adjusting the cooking fire.

Since 2017, the village has annually hosted a sticky rice festival and homecoming for locals who work in other places. The festival honors the village's traditional profession and provides an occasion for locals to come together and offer prayers for a prosperous and joyous new year.
Attendees take a keen interest in the festival’s sticky rice cooking contest and enjoy sampling the variety of sticky rice dishes on display. This event, a magnet for tourists, fosters an appreciation for the rich culinary heritage of Phu Thuong village.
In 2018, Phu Thuong sticky rice earned distinction as one of the 12 traditional Hanoi dishes featured at the US-North Korea Summit Press Center. In 2019 the product received a trademark registration certificate from the Intellectual Property Office of Vietnam.
