The visit takes place with Vietnam and Australia having just celebrated the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations (1973-2023) and 5 years of strategic partnership (2018-2023). This is the first time in 7 years that a Vietnamese Prime Minister has visited Australia and it’s Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh’s first visit to Australia as head of the Government.

Shared views, shared interests

Since Vietnam and Australia established diplomatic relations more than 50 years ago, the two countries have shared views and enjoyed common advantages of being in the same region, having close connections between their peoples, having complementary economies, and both proactively working to promote prosperity and solidarity in the region. The two countries are also facing common challenges such as climate change and transition to a green economy. These are foundations for Vietnam and Australia to continue mutual support and exploit new opportunities and common advantages to develop together in the new period.

On the eve of this important visit, Deputy Foreign Minister Do Hung Viet said the Vietnam-Australia Strategic Partnership is currently at a very high level of political trust, with comprehensive cooperation in all fields. Viet said Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh’s visit to Australia is therefore of great importance.

"This is an opportunity for the two countries to review the development of bilateral ties, especially their Strategic Partnership, and map out future cooperation orientations focused on promoting bilateral trade and investment cooperation. The highlight of this visit will be expanding education and training cooperation, including vocational training and enhancing cooperation in science and technology, innovation, taking advantage of current new dynamics, especially in the digital economy, green economy and energy transition, and renewable energy development in Vietnam. Vietnam and Australia aim to bring bilateral relations to a new level,' said Viet.

Raising bilateral ties to a new height

Australia and Vietnam are making great efforts to exploit the advantages of their strategic partnership. In addition to increasing political trust through visits by their leaders, they are rapidly promoting cooperation in security-defense, science-technology, education-training, economics-trade, and people-to-people exchanges. The two are discussing opportunities to expand cooperation to new fields.

People in the two countries believe it’s time for Vietnam-Australia relations to rise to a new level. 

Nicolas Moore, the Australian Government’s Special Envoy for Southeast Asia, said Australia is making great efforts to help Australian businesses better understand Vietnam and to facilitate bilateral cooperation.

Last year Australia announced the Southeast Asia Economic Strategy until 2040, which makes the main areas of cooperation with Vietnam agriculture and food, resources, transition to green energy, and education . The two countries share a strong political determination to develop bilateral ties to a new level which will benefit both countries and boost stability and prosperity in the region.
