The Quang Ba wholesale flower market on the Nghi Tam dyke is perhaps the most popular flower market in Hanoi. It is particularly popular during Tet. The flowers at this market come from Tay Tuu, Dong Anh, Gia Lam, and Phuc Yen-Vinh Phuc. The market opens very early in the morning, between 3 and 4 o’clock and offers a huge variety of flowers-chrysanthemums, roses, lilies, carnations, orchids, and more. Huynh Ngoc visited the market a few days ago:“During this time of the year, the Quang Ba flower market is a very popular destination for Hanoians. In the market, there are many exotic flowers from the south and from Da Lat. Peach blossoms, kumquat trees, yellow apricots, carnations and peonies are all here and selling at reasonable prices. A flower vase will make your house more pleasant at Tet. Peach blossoms signal the arrival of spring, kumquat trees represent reunion and lilies brighten the Tet atmosphere”.

The Quang Ba wholesale market is not just a flower supplier for shops in the city, it is also a meeting place for young people. Do Phan Vinh Hai lives in Ho Chi Minh City, but managed to find time to visit the market: “Visiting Hanoi during the days before Tet, I try to arrange time to visit the Quang Ba flower market, which I find very different from the Tet atmosphere in Ho Chi Minh city. Tet weather in Hanoi is cool. The atmosphere and the color of Tet in Hanoi is very impressive”.

The Hang Luoc flower market in Hanoi’s Old Quarters is open from the 23rd day to the last day of the 12th lunar month. Here, flowers on sale are traditional ones. Nguyen Hong Quang lives in Hanoi: “During Tet, it is interesting to visit the Hang Luoc flower market to buy some flowers and go for walk. In the cold weather, people go hand in hand around the market to select a peach tree that they like. Here you can find peach blossoms, violets, dahlias, and even single-petal gerbera. Though there are many exotic flowers, these traditional types of flowers are very typical of Hanoi”.

Hanoians go to the flower market not only to buy flowers but also to enjoy the market’s atmosphere. Le Hoai Nam visits the Hang Luoc market every Tet: “People come to the market to buy peach blossoms and kumquat trees and to see whether this year’s flowers are beautiful or not, which depends on the weather. To visit the flower market is to feel the spring atmosphere. In addition to square sticky rice cakes, peach blossoms and kumquat trees make Hanoi Tet more memorable”.

The Tet flower market typifies traditional Tet in Vietnam. People come to the market to buy flowers and find some peace of mind before another busy year gets underway.
