Summer activities for children at Van Lake - Hanoi’s Temple of Literature

(VOVWORLD) -  A summer program called “Young scholars-Nurturing dreams” is underway at Hanoi’s 1,000-year-old Temple of Literature, the first university in Vietnam. Organized by the Temple of Literature's Center for Cultural and Scientific Activities, the event offers children in Hanoi an opportunity to experience the cultural activities of previous generations.

“The event is aimed at creating entertaining activities for children this summer. We hope to teach children about our national culture while they practice their social skills,” said Le Xuan Kieu, Director of Temple of Literature’s Center for Cultural and Scientific Activities.

One activity introduces children to modern calligraphy and calligraphers.

“I’m very happy to introduce to Hanoi people, particularly children a different style of calligraphic letter drawing. This style requires the calligrapher to have both drawing and handwriting skills,” said calligrapher Nguyen Manh Tu.

An open exhibition displays traditional kites, imaginative kites, and foreign kites at Van Lake. Artisans from kite-making clubs and the Vietnamese Kite Heritage Conservation Centre teach visitors to make their own kites: the kite frame, the steering string, the flying string, and the glue-on paper. The best kites will receive a certificate from the Centre and be entered in international kite events.

The children are also taught by artisans from craft villages how to make traditional handicraft products such as paper masks, rattan fish-pots, bamboo butterflies, and scented tea. They can take home whatever they make themselves.
