2.5 billion USD pledged to fight Boko Haram

(VOVWORLD) - An international donor conference in Berlin on Monday pledged 2.5 billion USD to help countries around Lake Chad to fight Boko Haram.

The German Foreign Ministry said the aid would be disbursed to Nigeria, Chad, Niger and Cameroon in the coming years. Another 470 million USD will be made available in the form of low-rate loans. Germany said it wanted to add another 120 million USD in humanitarian aid for the region by 2020, and earmark 46 million USD for conflict prevention and stabilization. Boko Haram Islamic extremists have been waging a deadly insurgency in Nigeria since 2009.
