Afghanistan's humanitarian crisis grows

(VOVWORLD) - The humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan is growing at "an incredible pace" making the country desperate for urgent aid, said Mary-Ellen McGroarty, Country Director of World Food Program in Afghanistan.

McGroarty told reporters in New York that this is the first time she has ever seen a crisis escalating so quickly. Before the Taliban took over the government, the country was already in a crisis where more than 18 million people needed humanitarian assistance, she said, adding that things are even worse now. Food shortages and malnutrition are everywhere.

McGroarty urged for more humanitarian aid for Afghanistan before a harsh winter sets in. She said the Taliban government doesn’t block the way of aid delivery and there has been no difficulties at all for WFP in this matter as it respects humanitarian purpose, neutralization, and independent activities.
