The Egyptian Interior Ministry reported that a device planted on a luggage rack exploded suddenly at Helmiet Al-Zeitoun metro station in north Cairo.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the explosion.

In late October, a blast targeted a military checkpoint in nearby Sheikh Zuweid city, killing 30 soldiers and leaving tens of others injured. Egypt announced a three-month curfew and declared a state of emergency in some parts of North Sinai in response to the attack.

Egyptian security officials said the same day that Islamic gunmen conducted two attacks in North Sinai which killed 5 policemen and soldiers.
