King Norodom Sihamoni is expected to issue a decree appointing Dr. Hun Manet as the new Prime Minister on August 22.

Hun Sen, who is Chairman of the Cambodian People’s Party, said his resignation will open long lasting stability and development of Cambodia.

He affirmed he would not intervene in the new government’s leadership, but said he will continue as the head of the ruling party and member of the National Assembly.

Hun Sen has been Prime Minister for 38 years. In the July 23 election, his ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) won a resounding victory with 120 of 125 parliamentary seats. As a rule, the chairman of the winning party becomes Prime Minister.
