China’s FM urges peace in calls with Israeli, Palestinian counterparts

(VOVWORLD) - China calls for an immediate ceasefire to stop the conflict and guarantee the most basic living conditions of the people in Gaza, China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi told Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad Al-Maliki on Monday.

Wang said China calls for the convening of an international peace conference as soon as possible to promote the early resumption of peace talks between Palestine and Israel and formulate a specific timetable and roadmap.

In a phone call the same day with Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen, Wang said that all countries have the right to self-defense, but they should respect international humanitarian law and protect the safety of civilians. He said that only by embracing the notion of shared security can sustainable security be achieved.

During a Brussels meeting on Monday, EU foreign ministers stressed the importance of preventing a humanitarian disaster in Gaza and boosting humanitarian assistance. They acknowledged the urgency of increasing aid convoys' frequency and speed, enhancing the supply of medicine and food, and ensuring the necessary fuel for desalination plants.
