EC fears ‘strong reaction’ in markets after Italy vote

(VOVWORLD) - European Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker warned Thursday that financial markets could face turbulence after the Italian elections next month, saying Brussels is prepared for a worst-case scenario.

Italians will vote on March 4 amid uncertainty, with polls indicating that a coalition of the centre-right Forza Italia party and far-right, anti-immigrant groups could end up in control of the government.

It could be a very significant week for the European Union as a vote by Germany’s Social Democrats on whether to join the coalition led by Chancellor Angela Merkel will occur the same day, Juncker said. He added that there could be a strong reaction in the financial markets in the second week of March.
However, Junker said he believes Europe is “back on track” after years of crises over migration, the Eurozone, and Brexit.
