Egypt, Iran to resume direct flights between their capital cities

(VOVWORLD) - Direct flights between Tehran and Cairo could start in the next 45 days, according to the Iranian news agency Tasnim and Al Arabiya TV.

Tasnim reported that the two sides held talks last week to resume tourism between their countries, and said a delegation from the Egyptian tourism ministry is expected to visit Tehran soon.

The talks to resume tourism between the two countries have been mediated by Iraq, according to Tasnim.

The announcement by Tasnim comes with relations between Cairo and Tehran improving.

In May Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Iran welcomes the restoration of relations with Egypt, which have been severed since the Islamic Revolution in 1979.

Cairo and Tehran plan to exchange ambassadors in the coming months as part of the normalization of diplomatic relations brokered by Oman.
