The two chains, Zad and Seoudi, are owned by MB leader Khairat El-Shater and another senior MB official Abdel Rahman Seoudi. Zad and Seoudi’s branches will be transferred to the state-owned Egyptian Retail Corporation and are expected to re-open after completing inventories.
Since a coup ousted President Mohamed Morsi last year, Morsi’s party – the Muslim Brotherhood – has been ruthlessly suppressed. More than 1,400 MB supporters have been killed in clashes with Egyptian police and 16,000 members have been arrested.
