Egyptian Ambassador: Africa learns valuable lessons from the Dien Bien Phu Victory

(VOVWORLD) - Egyptian Ambassador to Vietnam from 2010 to 2014 Reda El Taify has hailed the Dien Bien Phu Victory, saying the Dien Bien Phu campaign was a battle that shaped the future and opened a path to independence for Vietnam.

In an interview granted for a VOV correspondent in Egypt on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu Victory, Mr. Reda El Taify said the Dien Bien Phu Victory put an end to the Indochina war, leading to the signing of the Geneva Agreement on July 21, 1954.

Mr. Reda El Taify affirmed that Dien Bien Phu is one of the world’s most important victories which is ranked on par with the well-known campaigns and battles in the world’s history.

The Dien Bien Phu victory could be attributable to the skillful command of General Vo Nguyen Giap who grasped the right opportunity to launch the campaign. A great lesson learned from the Dien Bien Phu victory was the people's war strategy, which combined the mass forces of the people with the armed forces.

Ambassador Reda El Taify emphasized: “The Dien Bien Phu victory inspired and encouraged the national liberation movements in Asia, Africa and even Latin America. Liberation movements learned from Vietnam's lessons put an end to colonial rule in Africa, Asia as well as many other third world countries."

He said Vietnamese people could be proud of the Dien Bien Phu victory. People in the Middle East and the Arab world would never forget this historic event, because most African leaders learned valuable lessons from the Dien Bien Phu victory. Thanks to that, we built a strategy to fight for liberation, and completely overthrew all forms of French colonialism in Africa.”
