The nationwide state of emergency was declared by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi just hours after the attacks killing at least 46 and injuring 100. He said the state of emergency is necessary to protect Egypt and its citizens from terrorism threats. The Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for the church bombings.
