European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said the agreement showed that Europe was able to act swiftly and resolutely to deal with common challenges.
The European Parliament’s chief negotiator Artis Pabriks said the guard will make sure that the EU external borders are safer and better managed.
The European Border and Coast Guard is built based on the existing EU border agency Frontex. The force is scheduled to begin operation in September to restore the border-free Schengen Area.
