EU, Israel plan longest undersea gas pipeline

(VOVworld) - Israel and several European countries including Italy, Greece, and Cyprus have pledged to move ahead with the world's longest undersea gas pipeline from the eastern Mediterranean to southern Europe, with support from the European Union. The announcement followed a joint conference in Tel Aviv attended by energy ministers from the four nations and the EU's Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy Miguel Arias Canete. The four ministers agreed to meet every six months over the next few years.

If carried out as planned, this 6.2 billion USD pipeline will take gas from Israel and Cyprus's recently discovered offshore gas reserves to Europe, potentially reducing European dependence on Russian energy. Feasibility studies have been completed and the pipeline will likely be in operation by 2025.
