(VOVWORLD) - The EU summoned Russia's EU ambassador on Monday to protest Moscow's decision to bar eight officials from entering Russia in retaliation for sanctions imposed on Russian citizens by the EU.

EU spokesman Peter Stano said high-level EU officials will express their strong condemnation and objection to Moscow’s action, which had no legal basis.

Russia's foreign ministry said on Friday that those banned include Vera Jourova, vice president for values and transparency at the executive European Commission, and David Sassoli, president of the European parliament.

The EU imposed sanctions on 6 Russians officials on March 2 and 22.
