More marches are scheduled to take place in Paris and other major cities in France.

Patty was killed after showing his students caricatures of the Muslim prophet Mohammed. 18-year-old Russian Abdullakh Anzorov killed Paty in the suburbs of Conflans Saint-Honorine, about 30 kilometers northwest of Paris.

The French Ministry of Justice said Anzorov used a knife to attack when the police approached and was shot dead after opening fire at the police. French police arrested 11 other people thought to be involved. French President Emmanuel Macron called the murder an attack by "Islamic terrorists".

The incident reminded people of the 2015 Charlie Hebdo case in which dozens were killed at the newspaper office in Paris after it published caricatures of the prophet Mohammed.
