Socialist Party senator Gilbert Roger, chief author of the resolution, said recognition is a pre-condition for opening real negotiations and establishing equal relationships between Israel and Palestine.

Last week, French lawmakers voted in favor of a resolution asking the French government to recognize the state of Palestine, the last solution for the conflict between Palestine and Israel. The resolutions passed by the French parliament and senate are non-biding on the French government.

European nations are increasingly pushing for the recognition of a Palestinian state, which will help to restart the stalled peace process and save the two-state solution.

Similar symbolic resolutions were adopted by lawmakers in Ireland, Britain, and Spain.
