Funeral and burial services for former PM Phan Van Khai

(VOVWORLD) - A solemn state funeral service was held on Thursday morning in Reunification Hall in Ho Chi Minh city for former Prime Minister Phan Van Khai. Present at the ceremony were Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, President Tran Dai Quang, and National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan.

In his eulogy, Party leader Trong said the life of former Prime Minister Phan Van Khai was associated with the struggle for national independence and reunification, national reform, construction and defense, and the path towards socialism. Mr. Khai was engaged in revolutionary activities for 70 years from the revolutionary movement in his home village in Hoc Mon to the Premiership. He was passionate about the national revolution and worked with the entire Party, people, and army to carry out reforms to steer Vietnam out of socio-economic crisis, develop a socialist-oriented market economy, stabilize politics, strengthen defense and security, and expand foreign relations and international integration.  

The Party leader said former Prime Minister Khai was absolutely loyal to the goals and revolutionary ideal of the Party, and was an exemplary Party member, who did his utmost to promote solidarity within the Party and put the interests of the Party, the country, and people first. He was close to the people, trusted by his comrades, and people, and respected by international friends.  Party leader Trong extended his deepest condolences to the relatives of former Prime Minister Phan Van Khai.

Former Prime Minister Phan Van Khai passed away at 1:30am on March 17 in Cu Chi district, Ho Chi Minh city, at the age of 85.  During 2 days of national mourning, March 20 and 21, 2.046 delegations comprising 108,000 people paid tribute to him in Reunification Hall in Ho Chi Minh city and the International Convention Center in Hanoi.
