The three-day cease-fire was set to end at midnight on Wednesday. In a telephone conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday, US President Barack Obama urged Israel to consider another temporary ceasefire to resume peace talks.
Meanwhile, Israeli troops are being deployed to border areas to defend against possible Hamas attacks when the ceasefire ends. Two hours before the truce began, southern Israel was hit by a rocket. Hamas denied responsibility for the attack
