Germany asks France to give UN Security Council seat to EU

(VOVWORLD) - German Vice Chancellor and Finance Minister Olaf Scholz said Wednesday that France should turn its permanent seat on the UN Security Council over to the EU, to allow the bloc to “speak with one voice” on foreign policy.

Mr. Scholz said if it accepts this, France can be the EU’s ambassador to the UN.  He said he acknowledges that Paris might need “a lot of persuading”, but it would be a “bold and smart” move.

France has been one of the 5 permanent members of the UN Security Council since the UN was established in 1945.
