(VOVworld) - German Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere said Tuesday that if the number of refugees entering Germany is kept at a low level, Germany could lift border control with Austria after May 12.

The controls on the Austrian were introduced in September to control refugees entering Germany from Austria. The number of refugees entering Germany has decreased since countries on the Balkan routes closed their borders and the EU-Turkey migrant deal took effect. About 20,000 new refugees came to Germany in March.

According to de Maiziere, disagreement between the German and Austrian governments over the refugee crisis ended with the EU-Turkey migrant deal. He said the most important thing now is for EU members to accept the humanitarian quota on refugees. EU also needs to close alternate routes through Italy and Bulgaria which refugees are using to enter Europe.
