The program launched a year-long drive toward the 50th anniversary of the patriotic emulation movement to encourage young people to contribute to the homeland, during the American war. Ms. Nga reviewed the glorious tradition of the movement and described the union’s future tasks. She said “in the future, we will give more attention to improving the city’s youths’ culture and observance of the law. We’ll also increase union activities and exchanges designed to develop a generation with five characteristics: firmness of purpose, civilized behavior, broad knowledge, good health, and useful skills. These are the keys to turning the capital and the country into a prosperous, beautiful, civilized place.

A street carnival capped the program, and thousands of people enjoyed a parade displaying the strength of the city’s youths.
