Hostage-takers were from Bangladesh group, not IS

(VOVworld) - The jihadists who slaughtered 20 hostages at a Dhaka restaurant were members of a homegrown Bangladeshi militant outfit and not followers of the Islamic State group, a senior minister said Sunday.

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan told AFP that the attackers were members of the Jamaeytul Mujahdeen Bangladesh, a group which has been banned in Bangladesh for more than a decade, and that they have no connections with the Islamic State. The Minister made the statement after IS claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Meanwhile, the UN Security Council delivered a statement calling terrorism in any form one of the most dangerous threats to international peace and security. UN Chief Ban Ki Moon denounced the attack, saying the perpetrators must be punished under the law.
