Illicit trafficking in small arms and light weapons highlighted in UNSC debate

(VOVWORLD) - The UN Security Council held an open discussion on Monday on illicit trade of small arms and light weapons.

In his address, Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy, Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the UN, said countries with the leading responsibility to ensure weapon management and control need to ensure the legitimate rights of countries to procure, produce, transfer, and possess weapons for defense and security purposes.
Mr. Quy stressed the importance of respecting international law and the UN Charter including humanitarian law, international treaties, and UNSC resolutions, and helping countries handle post-conflict security and social order.
