IMF warns of instability over Scottish independence

(VOVworld) – Scotland’s split from the UK would create a “new and different monetary, financial and fiscal situation, causing negative results,” said International Monetary Fund spokesperson Bill Murray Thursday in Washington.

Murray said uncertainty could lead to negative market reactions in the short term while long-term sustainability depends on decisions made during the transformation. Scotland will hold a referendum next Thursday to decide whether to secede from the UK. Scotland will leave the UK if more than 50 per cent of Scottish voters vote in favour. Scotland accounts for one-third of the UK’s land area.
