Int’l community asked to back justice in East Sea issue

(VOV) - Vietnamese Ambassador to South Africa Le Huy Hoang has called on politicians, academics and diplomatic missions in the country to voice objections to China’s aggressive actions in the East Sea and back Vietnam’s legitimate demand for China’s withdrawal of its illegally-placed rig from Vietnam’s waters. Addressing a workshop on the East Sea situation on Thursday, Hoang briefed the participants on the latest developments.

Many representatives from various diplomatic corps have voiced their support for justice and praised Vietnam’s restraint and peaceful measures. Mr. Hiroaki Fujiwara from the Japanese Embassy in South Africa reiterated Japan’s support for ASEAN countries, highlighted international law and asked concerned parties to refrain from using force.

The Philippines Embassy Charge d'Affaires, Mr Chad Jacinto said the seminar helped the political circles and local diplomatic corps gain up-to-date information about the tense situation in the East Sea. He said the Philippines opposed China’s claim over he “nine dash” line and supported his nation’s recent efforts in lodging a lawsuit against China with the International Court.

Participants suggested Vietnam take full advantage of relevant mechanisms and forums within the framework of the United Nations, the Non-Aligned Movement and the Group of 77 to get more support from the international community.

The event drew the participation of over 70 delegates, including representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Defense of South Africa, ambassadors and embassy representatives of ASEAN countries, New Zealand, the US, Japan, Cuba, Bulgaria, Algeria, Botswana and Zimbabwe, along with many scholars, journalists and local entrepreneurs.
