Iran ready to decrease heavy water stockpile to conform to JCPOA agreement

(VOVworld) - Iran will decrease its heavy water stockpile to conform with the conditions of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) reached last year, according to Reza Najafi, the Iranian ambassador to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Mr. Najafi said that Iran is ready to export its extra heavy water, saying that the country will continue to honor its commitments under the ICPOA agreement and, at the same time, monitor to see that the other sides are fulfilling their obligations.

Mr. Najafi's announcement followed IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano's report that Iran's inventory of heavy water exceeded 130 metric tons for the second time since the deal went into effect in January this year. Heavy water is the decisive element in certain types of nuclear reactors.
