Israel cracks down on Palestinian protesters on border with Gaza Strip

(VOVWORLD) - The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on Wednesday said it had deployed forces to deal with protests and riots by Palestinian crowds at the border barrier with the Gaza Strip. The rioters set off explosives and hurled grenades at the border barrier in the northern part of the Gaza Strip.

In footage shared by Palestinian media outlets, many large blasts sparked fires at the border with Israel.

The IDF took strong measures to suppress and disperse the rioters and threatened to open sniper fire if the situation continued to escalate.

Last Friday, hundreds of Palestinians protested near a security fence in the eastern part of Gaza City. Many of them tried to cross the fence into Israel and were injured by IDF fire.

Israel and Egypt blockaded the Gaza Strip due to security concerns in 2007, when the Islamic Hamas movement took control of the area. The blockade has caused great economic damage.

Most Palestinians in the Gaza Strip now depend on foreign aid.
