Michele Martina, a minister in the outgoing government, told reporters that the defeat was very clearly a negative result for the party.

Andrea Marcucci, one of the party's lawmakers, wrote on his Facebook page, that voters have spoken very clearly and irrefutably, saying the populists have won and the Democratic Party has lost. He added the Democratic Party left Italy with much better economic results than those that came before and confirmed that the Party will begin again in opposition.

More than 46.5 eligible million voters cast their ballots at Italy’s 18th general election to determine 630 deputies and 315 senators at over 60,000 polling stations. 37 percent of seats in both houses will be elected on a first-past-the-post basis.
