Japan, Russia look to sign peace treaty

(VOVWORLD) - Japan’s Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi said Tuesday he will make a five-day trip to Moscow next week to hold peace  talks with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov.

The trip scheduled from next Tuesday will be Motegi’s first visit to Russia since a September Cabinet reshuffle in which he was made lead negotiator in a territorial row between Japan and Russia. The two countries have been unable to sign a formal peace treaty for more than 70 years since the end of World War II, with a dispute unresolved over the sovereignty of a group of Russian-held islands lying off the northeastern coast of Hokkaido.
