Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono following talks with South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha said the dispute is a bitter legacy of Japan’s 1910-1945 colonization of the Korean peninsula. He said Japan wants to maintain its General Security of Military Information Agreement with South Korea, which can be extended if South Korea agrees.

Kono urged China and South Korea to remove their import bans on produce from areas near Japan’s Fukushima nuclear disaster site, where three reactors suffered melt downs after an earthquake and tsunami in 2011.
