(VOVworld) – On Thursday the US Senate approved Loretta Lynch as the new Attorney General following Eric Holder’s resignation last September. Lynch is the first African-American woman to hold the position.

Ms. Lynch, the US Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, was confirmed by a 56 to 43 vote after weeks of delay. The Senate held up her confirmation until it had voted on human trafficking and abortion bills, a process that dragged on for weeks. Some Republicans opposed her because Ms. Lynch defended President Obama’s executive actions on immigration which have permitted some 5 million illegal immigrants to stay and work in the US.
