This is Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's first official visit to Vietnam since he took office in December last year. The visit takes place as the two countries celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of bilateral diplomatic relations (March 30, 1973 - March 30, 2023).

The two countries upgraded their relations to a strategic partnership in 2015.

In a press release about the Malaysian Prime Minister’s official visit to Vietnam, the Malaysian Foreign Ministry said in addition to meetings with Vietnamese leaders, Prime Minister Anwar will witness the exchange of a Memorandum of Understanding between Vietnamese and Malaysian ministries and sectors on strengthening bilateral trade and investment ties.

The visit is expected to foster a closer relationship between the two countries as neighbors within ASEAN.
