Mexico widens tax probe following Panama Papers

(VOVworld) - Mexico is widening a probe into tax evasion by requiring banks to hand over names of local clients with accounts in tax havens.

A separate letter from Mexico's tax authority, SAT, asked banking regulators to compel banks and brokerages to comply with the massive information request in 15 working days. If they fail to comply, they could face fines or temporary closure.

According to the latest information, 289 Mexicans, including politicians, businesses and artists, were included in the Panama papers’ lists. SAT said 30 of 33 of unveiled cases in Mexico related to Panama papers have been clearly identified, and 3 others are still under investigation.
