Those were high on the agenda of the international workshop called "International migration and social integration - inclusion and development" in Hanoi on Tuesday.

Addressing the event, Associate Professor Dr Tran Quang Tien, Director of the Vietnam Women’s Academy, said that migration data shows that Vietnam has 110,000 people per year going abroad to work. This accounted for 7-10% of all new jobs for Vietnamese workers. The number of foreign workers in Vietnam as of early last year was 100,000 people.

“Employment abroad earns higher incomes. Migrant workers experience a different lifestyle and culture and improve their adaptability to new environments. Migration has helped redefine gender roles. In Vietnam, internal migration is increasing,” said Tien.

Meeting participants discussed migration and gender issues, migration and healthcare, migration and social protection, and other migration-related issues, plus issues related to social integration. Solutions were proposed to limit the downsides of migration, enhance migrants’ adaptation, and promote gender equality and sustainable development.
