Nam Giao Offering Ceremony of Nguyen Dynasty

(VOVworld)- Around 1,000 people attended the Nam Giao Offering Ceremony in Hue City yesterday as part of the Hue festival. This was Hue’s most important ritual in feudal times to honour the sky, earth and important gods and pray for favourable weather , prosperity and peace. Thanks to its important cultural and historical significance, the ritual has been restored and observed at Hue festivals since 2002. The two-part ritual includes carrying ancestral tablets from Trai Cung (Fasting Palace) to the Nam Giao esplanade and presenting offerings. Ancestral tablets worship the sky and earth, mountains and rivers, gods and kings. It is performed at the Phuong Dan and Vien Dan sites. "The restoration of the offering ceremony is of great significance as it represents people’s wish to live in harmony with nature. The ceremony also reflects a fine tradition of Vietnamese people and their wish for favorable weather, wealthy and a peaceful and prosperous country. We have restored several traditional royal festivals and intend to restore the offering ceremony to its original forms", said Phan Thanh Hai, Director of the Hue Relics Preservation Center.
