In her farewell address, former PM Elisabeth Borne said that, during her 20 months in office, she never faltered in the face of any difficulty to carry out necessary reforms for France.

She said that her becoming the second woman in history to hold the position of Prime Minister inspired women to take on more important positions in French society.

New Prime Minister Gabriel Attal, who is 34, said that his becoming the youngest French Prime Minister since 1958 is a symbol of French innovation and youth.

“I have heard and read in the past hours that the youngest President and the youngest Prime Minister in history have been appointed. This is a symbol of boldness and change and, above all, a symbol of faith in youth, a generation worthy of our tireless striving," said Attal.

He then announced that his three priorities will be: jobs, simplification of procedures and tax relief for businesses, and increased vocational training for young people.

Attal also pledged to promote education reforms, which he was in charge of since last July as Minister of Education before he was appointed Prime Minister.

Following the ceremony, Attal visited France’s northern Pas-de Calais region, which has suffered heavy damage from flooding.
