Algeria received Niger's official notification of its acceptance of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune's mediation initiative, the ministry said in a statement read out on national television.

Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf is expected to visit Niamey as soon as possible to discuss with all stakeholders. The statement said the mediation will pave the way to a peaceful resolution of the crisis.

In July, Niger’s presidential guard, led by General Abdourahmane Tchiani, staged a coup and arrested President Mohamed Bazoum.

Colonel Major Amadou Abdramane declared that they had suspended Niger’s Constitution and created a National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland (CNSP).

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) imposed sanctions against Niger and warned that it might intervene militarily in Niger if diplomatic efforts to return Bazoum to power failed.

Algeria’s President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has rejected any foreign military intervention in Niger.
