Niger junta agrees to dialogue

(VOVWORLD) - A group of Nigerian Islamic scholars who met Niger’s coup leader said Sunday that the junta agreed to hold talks and resolve a standoff with West African leaders.

Many regional observers have seen the recent shift in attitude by the junta as unexpected.

Previously, the Niger coup leaders displayed a firm stance, refusing to engage in negotiations with West African countries and openly expressing their readiness to counter any military intervention in the country.

However, analysts believe it is highly improbable for the junta to fulfill the requests made by Western countries and West African states to restore constitutional order and reinstate President Mohamed Bazoum, who was ousted from power.
