OPCW: Destroying Syria’s Chemical weapons at sea is a possibility

(VOVworld)- The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) of the United Nation on Wednesday said that more than 1 thousand tons of Syrian chemical weapons and materials could be destroyed at sea rather on land if no country agrees to destroy them on their territories.

Christian Chartier, Spokesperson for OPCW said this is one of the solutions suggested by UN members but no final decision has been made. The OPCW executive board last Friday passed the final roadmap to completely destroy Syrian chemical weapons in mid-2014. According to the plan, most dangerous chemical weapons must be dismantled by the end of this year and destroyed from December 2013 until March 2014. Some other weapons will be destroyed outside Syria in April 2014 and final elimination will be completed by the end of June next year. However, a detailed plan to destroy Syrian chemical weapons on land or at sea will be approved on December 17.
