Yasay met his Japanese counterpart, Fumio Kishida, in the Philippines to discuss regional security and cooperation on maritime security, with Japan reaffirming its help.
They said both Japan and the Philippines are facing similar problems in the East China Sea and the East Sea. Japan is in dispute with China over the islands, called Senkaku by Japan and Diaoyu by China, under Japan’s control in the East China Sea. China and the Philippines have overlapping claims of sovereignty in the region.
