Mr. Chinh was speaking at Sunday’s conference to review a plan on comprehensive development of Phu Quoc island in the southern province of Kien Giang until 2010 with a vision to 2020.

He said Phu Quoc has recorded significant progress in socio-economic development over the last two decades, with an average annual growth rate of 19.6%. Phu Quoc was upgraded into a second-tier city in 2020 and is striving to become a first-tier city by 2025.

To ensure Phu Quoc’s rapid and sustainable development in the future, the Prime Minister emphasized the need to focus on environmental protection, especially forest and marine ecology protection; land and resource management; and climate change adaptation.

Phu Quoc must promote administrative reform, improve the investment and business environment, and enhance its regional and international competitiveness, said Mr. Chinh.

On Saturday, the Prime Minister attended the ground-breaking ceremony for the Hon Thom marine tourism, resort and entertainment complex in Phu Quoc.

The 310-hectare complex will be built by Sun Group at a cost of two billion USD, featuring a water park, a theme park, an aquarium, an opera house, and an ecological resort. It will be developed into a tropical paradise.
