Born on August 13, 1926, Fidel Castro was a revolutionary icon and one of the most prominent figures of the 20th century. Under his leadership, Cuba wrote a glorious page in world history with a revolution to overthrow dictatorship. Fidel united Cuban revolutionary forces into a single party and founded the socialist state on the Caribbean island. He was the Cuban Prime Minister from 1959 to 1976, and then served as President until he left office in 2008. Fidel also held the post of First Secretary of the Cuban Communist Party from 1965 to 2011.

He was the only foreign head of state to visit the liberated zone in Vietnam's Quang Tri province during the American war. The visit was made in September, 1973 at his proposal.
